Traditionally, in ParaView, users can develop C++ plugins to generate or process data through custom mathematical models, file reads, or predefined operations. However, this process can be challenging due to the requisite familiarity with C++ and the VTK data model. Python-based Programmable Filters and Source offer a more accessible alternative, enabling users to directly construct and modify 3D objects within ParaView using straightforward Python scripts.

In this two-hour course, we will explore several pipelines:

  • utilize Programmable Source to construct a custom reader for your data (which ParaView cannot natively read),
  • employ Programmable Filter to unwrap a spherical dataset into a 3D Mollweide projection,
  • and several other very simple examples.
