This h ands-on workshop\, delivered by the UBC Library Research D ata Management team\, introduces the importance of README files in doc umenting research data for long-term access and reuse. Designed for gradua te students\, researchers\, and staff\, the session provides practical gui dance for creating clear\, consistent\, and useful data documentation.

Participants will learn how to:

Identify th e key components of an effective README file\, including dataset descripti on\, file structure\, and usage instructions
Apply best practices to improve data transparency\, usability\, and alignment with FAIR princip les
Use templates and open tools to create and maintain README fil es throughout the research lifecycle
